Anna Krasno, Phd

I am a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY28483) and have been in the field of autism for over 15 years. I am passionate about accurate autism diagnosis and work with individuals of all ages and identities to provide neurodiverse affirming assessments. I have served the Santa Barbara community for 10 years.

I am the Clinical Director of the UCSB Koegel Autism Center where I oversee the clinical training and supervision of the Autism Center staff as well as design and implement clinical service initiatives. I run the Koegel Autism Center Assessment Clinic in addition to leading their other clinical services.

I have served on the Santa Barbara County Psychological Association (SBCPA) Board for 5 years, including as President in 2022. I currently serve as the Local Advocacy Representative (LAN).

My APProach

I am very interested in understanding the internal, hidden, and genuine experience of neurodivergent individuals during the diagnostic process. Autism can present in many different ways and individuals go missed or misdiagnosed. Many individuals and parents are dismissed or gaslit by medical providers. I am different. I work to understand and validate experiences. I know that autism can be hidden and I seek to understand the effort that goes into social interactions, including masking and camouflaging of autistic traits. My evaluations include self-report questionnaires about autistic experiences, masking questionnaire and interview, and an in-depth clinical interview to understand individuals’ authentic and genuine experiences.

Autism is a difference in brain wiring and accurate diagnosis can be powerful in validating and affirming one’s lived experience. A diagnostic process done in a neurodiverse affirming manner can be therapeutic.

Specialties Include: Diagnosing Pathological Demand Avoidance/Pervasive Drive for Autonomy (PDA) Profile of Autism; working with assigned female at birth (AFAB) individuals; gender diverse, non-binary, and trans-identifying individuals; multicultural differences; adults; BIPOC individuals; understanding autistic burnout; distinguishing autism from other diagnoses; working to understand hidden/masked experiences and the emotional and physical toll this can take on daily functioning.

My tRAINING

I am a licensed psychologist (PSY28483) and received my Ph.D. in Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology (clinical emphasis) from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2014. Prior to my graduate training, I spent two years as a Donald J. Cohen Fellow in Developmental Social Neuroscience at the Yale Child Study Center's Autism Program (housed within Yale University School of Medicine) where I researched early diagnosis via eye tracking measures. I completed my pre-doctoral internship at Children's Health Council in Palo Alto, CA, and Lucille Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University. I obtained my post-doctoral training at CALM in Santa Barbara, CA.

I have been the Clinical Director of the Koegel Autism Center at UCSB since July 2017, working additionally as Acting Director from July 1, 2023 to June 20, 2024. I also spent 3 years at California Counseling Clinics in Santa Barbara as the Autism Clinical Specialist, where I conducted autism assessments and consultations. Through a CCC contract, I worked with Tri-County Regional Center (TCRC) to conduct diagnostic evaluations for children referred from the Early Start program.

I have seen hundreds of individuals for autism assessment, who span ages 14 months to 65 years old. I specialize in working with those who have been misdiagnosed or missed, including assigned female at birth (AFAB) individuals, BIPOC individuals, and those who are trans, non-binary, and gender diverse, or any intersection of these identities.
